The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) aims to improve the quality of life for all through providing better sporting opportunities at every level. Sport is very powerful both in the pursuit of excellence and helping to tackle social and health problems. The 2004 Spending Review will bring £431 million from central government for sport over the period 2005 to 2008.

London 2012
A representative from Government Office for the East of England Regeneration and Cultural Development Team (RCD) has a place on the Regional Working Group. This has been set up both to work with the London 2012 Bid team to ensure the region is represented in plans for a London Games, and to encourage the region to get behind the Bid. It encompasses key regional organisations, which straddle the worlds of sport, health and lifestyle, business and tourism, culture and the arts, secondary and higher education and local government, all areas that would be affected by a successful bid.
Sport and Renewal Network
The group, which is made up of representatives from Sport England, Regional Regeneration projects, the Youth Service, East of England Development Agency among others, meets to look at the relationship between sport and renewal and the part it plays in regenerating an area along with advocacy and best practice.
